Equipment checklist
You do not need specialist equipment for online music lessons. Here is what you need:
Your instrument
The most important thing. Make sure it is in reasonable working order — tuned if applicable, strings changed if needed, and accessible during the lesson.
Device
A laptop or desktop computer is recommended for the best experience — larger screen, easier to manage camera and microphone settings, and most stable for video calls. A tablet (e.g. iPad) also works well. A smartphone can be used in a pinch but the small screen size makes it less comfortable for longer lessons.
Internet connection
A stable broadband connection is essential. Where possible, use a wired ethernet connection rather than Wi-Fi. If you must use Wi-Fi, try to be in the same room as your router during lessons.
Camera
The built-in camera on most laptops and tablets is adequate. If you want better video quality, an external USB webcam is an affordable upgrade. Position the camera so your teacher can see both your face and your instrument if possible.
Microphone
Built-in laptop microphones work reasonably well for online lessons. For better audio quality — especially for singing or acoustic instruments — an external USB microphone or audio interface makes a noticeable difference.
Other
- A music stand if your instrument requires one
- Sheet music or relevant books if your teacher has asked you to prepare something
- Pencil and notebook for notes
- Device plugged in or fully charged
